Welcome to The Question, where you’ll get answers about life at Brown all year long! I’m Celina Stewart, and I’ll be bringing you insights (and photos!) into my fourth year at Brown and my answers to some of the questions I wish I’d asked before college.
If you have looked into Brown a considerable amount or know anyone who goes here, you’ve probably heard about our big spring event: Spring Weekend! However, did you know that Spring Weekend is part of a bigger series of events and activities on campus, largely known as Spring Week? Read on to learn more about exactly what that entails…
First things first, Spring Weekend itself is basically a weekend full of activities on campus, led by a series of concerts on both Friday and Saturday nights. Usually, Friday night headliners are “louder” or more “popular” – previous Friday night acts have included Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, and Diplo (this year, Fetty Wap). Saturday’s concert is longer and usually fulfills the “chill” aspects of the weekend, with previous acts including Modest Mouse (honestly, I’ve only gone the one time to Saturday, so I don’t know!). The good news is that you can get tickets to both concerts, or just one, or neither!
The weekend kickoff is led by something called Carnival, which is basically bouncy castles and other fun games to get people in a fun mindset. Then concerts start on Friday, followed by games, trivia activities, Fratty in the Ratty (basically, a giant feast after the concerts) and other activities to get people active on campus.
For those who don’t want to participate in the sponsored activities, you basically just have an extra weekend which most professors respect as a time when little to no work will be accomplished. And don’t worry -all of these activities are meant to be fun and give students a safe experience, so being substance free is totally accepted (I know some people may worry about the perception of Spring Weekend as a “party” all weekend).
So, the main question is: who would you most like to see for Spring Weekend when you get to Brown?
