Stage Write: Life as a Stage Manager

(omg you’re gonna have so much fun)

Are you interested in theatre at Brown? Whether you’re a veteran actor or a fresh newbie, you’ve come to the right place – Stage Write! I’m Olivia Cummings, first-year Shakespeare enthusiast, techie, and budding thespian. I’ll be writing about my experiences in the various facets of theatre life at Brown this year.

If you read some of my posts last back in the fall, you’d know that I was one of the three assistant stage managers for Urinetown.  Well I’ve moved up the rankings y’all – now I’m stage manager (SM) for a play called The Flick!  Read on to learn more about life as an SM at Brown!

You spend a lot of time on your computer (sending out calls (the daily schedules), rehearsal reports, and writing/receiving countless emails).catcomp

But sending out calls at 1am every morning can be kind of exhausting…

Plus there’s so much drama…

Oh wait, not that kind of drama.consedcend

That kind of drama. Though most of the time you just ignore the near-endless sass.

Since your job is to keep everyone on schedule sometimes you feel like the wicked witch of the west managing a bunch of flying monkeys.

And your idea of what is okay definitely changes.

But at the end you know you’ll be crying tears of joy/nostalgia when the actors take their final bows.

As a potential Immunobiology and/or Public Health concentrator who is pre-med (PLME), I’ll approach theatre as someone who is doing it as a (very time-intensive) hobby. If you have any questions for me or would like to be connected with someone who is looking to pursue theatre after college, email me at olivia_cummings@brown.eduLooking forward to seeing you all at Brown soon!
