Welcome to Office Hour! I’m Aileen Seo, a first-year from San Diego, California and every week I’ll be sitting down with professors to talk about some of the cool things they are doing here at Brown! I’ll be writing about everything from their research to what they love most about teaching here, so stay tuned!
Talking to professors during office hours can be scary thing, especially for first-years who are still struggling to wrap their heads around the idea that their professors are renowned authors and pioneers in their fields. So, I thought it would be nice to discuss just how friendly Brown professors really are.
1) They invite you over for Thanksgiving dinner. Professor Jim Head of the geological sciences department invited those of his students who are staying at school over Thanksgiving to enjoy dinner with his family.
2) They send out mass emails to reassure you. Professor Stefano Bloch of the urban studies program recently sent out an email to reassure and remind students that concerns over grades should, in no way, get in the way of an open and stimulating learning environment.
3) They are even willing to Skype you…if you need it. Professor Paul Armstrong of the English department offered to Skype students over the weekend if they weren’t able to make his office hours during the week.
Professors at Brown are really here for their students and there really is no need to be afraid of spending a half hour at office hours. They’re here to build relationships with their students and to share their wisdom. Believe it or not, they are (friendly) people too!
