Hey y’all! I’m Eimi (pronounced ‘Amy’) and I’m your sophomore correspondent for Music to My Ears, my personal outlet that showcases the different facets that Brown’s music scene has to offer!
I’m back! Sorry about the lack of a post last week; I was sick and slumping BIG TIME from my Carnegie high… it can be super difficult to recover from being on Cloud 9 to not.
Anyhow, this weekend was family weekend and I thought I would use this post to introduce what kind of musical events were going on around campus because they were all super cool and worth going to, with parents or without. So, without further ado…
Friday, October 24th:
4:00 p.m: Piano Workshop, featuring students in the Applied Music Program. Free and open to visiting families. (Grant Recital Hall)
6:30 p.m: Musical Forum’s Family Weekend Revue, featuring songs from hit musicals and movies. (Almunae Hall Crystal Room)
7:30 p.m: Brown Madrigal Singers Family Weekend Concert, featuring the Brown Madrigal Singers, Brown’s only classical a cappella group. (Building for Environmental Research & Teaching, Carmichael Auditorium)
8:30 p.m: The Browns’tones and Brown Derbies present: I Got it From My Momma, featuring the Brown Derbies, an all-malle a cappella group, and the Browns’tones, an all-female a cappella group. $5 for students and $8 for adults. (Salomon Hall 101)
9:00 p.m: Brown University Jazz Band Concert, with Matthew McGarrell (director). $5 per person. (Grant Recital Hall)
Saturday, October 25th:
11:00 a.m: Chamber Music Brunch Recital, featuring students from Chamber Music and the Applied Music Program.My quartet performed as a group for the first time! We played the 1st movement of Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor. (Grant Recital Hall)
5:00 p.m: Higher Keys Concert, featuring the Higher Keys, Brown’s oldest co-ed a cappella group.$5 for students and $10 for the general public. (List Art Center 120)
5:00 p.m: Mariachi de Brown, featuring Mariachi de Brown, Brown’s official Mariachi band since 2005. (Faunce Arch)
6:00 p.m. and 7:40 p.m: Waterfire, featuring performances by Gendo Taiko, the Brown/RISD Japanese drumming group. (Downtown Providence).
7:00 p.m: Harmonic Motion Concert, featuring Harmonic Motion, a co-ed a cappella group specializing in contemporary music: rock, pop, R&B and alternative. (List Art Center 120)
7:30 p.m: Disney A Cappella Concert, featuring Disney A Cappella, Brown’s first and only all-Disney co-ed a cappella group. (Building for Environmental Research & Teaching, Carmichael Auditorium)
8:00 p.m: Jabberwocks and the Chattertocks Concert, featuring the Jabberwocks, Brown’s oldest all-male a cappella group, and the Chattertocks, Brown’s oldest all-female a cappella group. $5 for students and $10 for the general public. (Salomon DECI)
Sunday, October 26th:
12:00 p.m: Beats and Bagels, featuring the Alef Beats, Brown/RISD’s Jewish-themed a cappella group. (Brown/RISD Hillel)
2:00 p.m: Brown University Chorus Concert, with L. Frederick Jodry (conductor) and featuring Fire Songs of Morten Lauridsen, Water Night of Eric Whitacre, and works of Stanfod, Rutter, Pearsall, and Moerly. $5 for students and $15 for the general public. (Sayles Hall)
