With 400 plus student groups and tons of events daily, how does a Brown student navigate life outside of the lecture hall? I’m Lily Hartmann, and I am the freshmen behind “The Extras”; the blog that aims to give you a glimpse into the most exciting and noteworthy activities on campus. Throughout the year this blog will give you snapshots of what Brunonians do when they aren’t hitting the books on College Hill!
There are tons of people on campus with beards, so why not have a group on centered around it? Elliot Grossman ’17 had this exact same idea when he started the Brown University Beard Appreciation Society this semester. He seeks to bring together beard owners, beard lovers, and beard aficionados from all throughout Brown University. The founder emphasizes that all or welcome, even if you sport facial hair or not. The group has been recently approved and granted funding by the Undergraduate Council of Students who is in charge of student groups on campus. The Beard Appreciation Society is a great example of how it is possible and easy it is to start something new at Brown.
In the future they hope to host lectures on beards, create a new logo for their group, and maybe even create a blog showing off those sporting beards on campus. But in general, the Beard Appreciation Society wants to foster open conversation about facial hair, and create a space for this to occur on a regular basis. So if you sport a beard or are just passionate about facial hair, make sure you join the Brown University Beard Appreciation Society when you get to Brown!
If you want more information about this group or any other extra on campus, please send me an email! I look forward to sharing more about extras on campus throughout the semester!
