With 400 plus student groups and tons of events daily, how does a Brown student navigate life outside of the lecture hall? I’m Lily Hartmann, and I am the freshmen behind “The Extras”; the blog that aims to give you a glimpse into the most exciting and noteworthy activities on campus. Throughout the year this blog will give you snapshots of what Brunonians do when they aren’t hitting the books on College Hill!
Do you sing in choir, sing in the shower, or ever just randomly burst out in song? Do you picture yourself in that all female A Capella group from Pitch Perfect? If you answered yes to any parts of the previous questions, Brown’s A Capella scene may be just the thing for you. A Capella at Brown is probably one of the most noted but diverse areas of extracurriculars on campus. If you’re into dubstep, there is Wubapella but if you just want to sing Disney tunes all day, you could join Disney A Capella. But we also have all of the traditional groups too like The Jabberwocks and The Brown Derbies if that is more your style.
So A Capella auditions take place in the beginning of fall semester and include callbacks and callback hangouts too. Once callbacks end, the A Capella groups convene for the well-known Midnight Meeting. Every member of every group gathers together on the Thursday night after all callbacks are over in one room to decide which group will take which callbackee. The groups then request callbackees that they would like as their members, and the leader of the meeting will consider the preference of the callbackee too. The leader of the meeting will then announce the matches. Those who are chosen are then whisked away by their new A Capella family from their dorm rooms for a night of fun and tradition.
But don’t worry if you are not in an A Capella group on campus. Each group holds a variety of concerts throughout the semester including Arch Sings and caroling at the Midnight Organ Concert, so you can get your fill of A Capella music throughout the year!
And finally a couple fun facts about A Capella at Brown: we have the most a cappella groups per capita in the US and home to International Championships of Collegiate A Cappella award-winning groups the Higher Keys, the Jabberwocks, and the Brown Derbies!
