BenchPress: A Look at Intramurals

BenchPress, your guide to all things Brown Athletics! I’m Sam Wickham, and I’ll be your ironically scrawny first year blogger. Together, we’ll check in on all the Bears teams as they fight on for the best school ever. Though my weight lifting skills are about equal to my blogging ones, I hope to get stronger as the year goes on (pun intended!). Go bears!
Hey all! Last week I shed some light on the awesome club athletics program here at Brown, so this week I wanted to describe the true heart of athletics here: intramural sports. Requiring less involvement than varsity or club sports, intramurals are great for the casual sports lover. Don’t think these games will all fun and games, however: with
over 4,100 enthusiastic participants from the Brown community, any game in any sport is bound to have a little friendly competition.
More after the jump:
What most impresses me about the intramural program here is the sheer number of “sports” you can partake in. In the fall, soccer, flag football, 3v3 basketball and volleyball are favorites, but those less athletically minded can try their hand in the Rocks, Paper, Scissors or “Family Feud” tournaments. Popular winter sports include indoor soccer and 5v5 basketball, while spring offer less traditional like dodgeball or “Trivia Bowl”. Most of these sports offer multiple leagues, (high, middle, and low) that separate the competition levels. In this way, intramurals truly do offer something for any type of athlete at any time of the year. Intramural games are also a great reason to get pumped up. From the witty team name to the matching home-made uniforms, intramural games offer a great platform to be both goofy and competitive. The main motivation for most participants is to become league champions. While the victors do gain so sweet bragging rights, they also receive something much better: the intramural champions t-shirt. This shirt exudes coolness, and because it was earned through weeks of sweat, blood and tears, you’ll be one of the proud few to rock it. This year’s shirt is a long-sleeve white tee with a likeness of the American flag on the front, with little Bears for the stars. I’ve been foiled twice in wiffleball and kickball from snagging this shirt, so goodness knows I’ll be signing up for multiple IM sports this winter! If (when) I finally get it, I’ll be sure to post a picture!
P.S. Check out http://www.imleagues.com, the website we use to register for all our IM sports. Pretty cool!
Please send me any comments or questions! I’d love to hear from you. If you’re curious about Brown athletics or how to get involved, shoot me an email at samuel_wickham@brown.edu. Getting emails is a highlight of my day, so bring ‘em on!
